about us title

Neuroscience is too large a subject to be fully encompassed by a single academic department. To obtain a broader view of neuroscience research and training at Columbia see the Columbia Neuroscience website.

Long-time faculty member Steven A. Siegelbaum, Ph.D., professor of neuroscience and pharmacology, has been named chair of the Department of Neuroscience, effective January 1, 2009. Dr. Siegelbaum has been serving as vice chair of the department since its formation in July 2007. He joined Columbia in 1981. A Howard Hughes Medical Investigator since 1986, Dr. Siegelbaum studies the electrical properties of individual neurons and their synapses, specifically elucidating how they regulate the flow of information through neural circuits during memory storage and recall. He received his bachelor's degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard and his doctorate from Yale and completed postdoctoral research at London's University College and the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris.
