Facilities & Resources

Libraries: The libraries of Columbia University, housing more than 6 million volumes, over 4 million microfilms, and 26 million manuscripts, provide superb support for instructional and research information needs. Access to hundreds of online databases and journals is available through online subscriptions. In addition to maintaining comprehensive collections in neuroscience and related areas, the libraries provide guidance to individuals and groups for using library resources, as well as assistance in locating and accessing materials and information available elsewhere. Collections of relevant books and journals are found in the Health Sciences Library and the consolidated Science Library on the Arts and Sciences campus.

Computing: CUIT manages an array of computer labs, terminal clusters, ColumbiaNet stations, multimedia classrooms, and provides technical support services for research applications that require high speed computation.

Animal research: Animal welfare is supervised by an institutional animal care and use committee (IACUC) that carries out periodic inspections, supervises protocols and regulates care.

Core facilities: The Medical Center Campus makes available several laboratory core facilities including nucleic acid and peptide analysis and synthesis facilities, a confocal microscope facility, electron microscopy facilities, microarray facilities, core facilities for molecular genetics, flow cytometry, fluorescence microscopy, and biostatistics. A key resource is the superbly organized Columbia Brain Bank. The Pathology and Cell Biology Department also provides a histology facility that can provide assistance in analysis of rodent, primate and human brain. The Department of Neuroscience provides several core resources including tissue culture clean rooms with laminar flow hoods, glassware washing facilities and autoclaves, high speed and ultracentrifuges, liquid and gamma scintillation counters, a darkroom, a histology laboratory with a conventional light microscope and two fluorescence microscopes, a fully-staffed electronics and machine shop. Biological Sciences houses a shared core for two dimensional Electrophoretic x mass spectroscopic analysis of proteins and a Proteomics Core headed by Dr. Lewis Brown. Faculty and trainees on both campuses have access to the Columbia University Program in Imaging and Cognitive Sciences (PICS), a shared research center, dedicated for research and teaching in cognitive neuroscience at Columbia. PICS is located in the Neurological Institute of New York on the Columbia University Medical School campus. PICS contains three fMRI scanners: two Phillips scanners (one 1.5T and one 3T) and one 1.5T GE Signa Twin Speed scanner. Equipped with a standard GE head gradient system, the scanner is capable of both echo planar and proton spectroscopy imaging and is designated for imaging in human behavioral research.

Faculty research laboratories: Ranging in size from 1000 to over 4,000 sq. feet, the Department administers faculty laboratories well equipped for conducting research.
